MIDLAND, TX — Incumbent Congressman August Pfluger and Democratic nominee Claire Reynolds faced off Monday night in a debate hosted by Basin PBS, where Reynolds challenged Pfluger’s positions on presidential power and called for a Congress willing to stand up for the people it represents.
During the debate, Pfluger focused on the Biden-Harris administration, the “radical left,” and his support for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Pfluger also defended the Trump Administration’s Canadian tariffs.
Reynolds, meanwhile, argued that Congress must do more than follow the president’s lead, using its constitutional authority to provide oversight and challenge presidential policies when they fail the public.
“Congress must be willing to stand up to the president and put the people first,” said Reynolds, arguing that elected officials should not allow party loyalty to come before their responsibility to the public.
Her remarks reflect the central theme of her campaign: elected officials must be willing to challenge those in power when doing so serves the public interest, regardless of party affiliation.
Reynolds has made affordability, government accountability, rural health care, clean water, and support for energy workers central priorities in her campaign. She has also called for an end to congressional stock trading.
“People across this district deserve a representative who works for them, not for corporations or wealthy donors,” said Reynolds. “Our government is supposed to answer to the people, and that means being willing to challenge anyone when they aren’t doing what’s right for the people they represent.”
As the November 3 election approaches, Reynolds says her focus remains on delivering a government that acts on the challenges facing the families of District 11, represents their interests, and puts them first.
