AUSTIN, Texas - Claire Reynolds, Democratic candidate for U.S. House in Texas’s 11th Congressional District, announced today that she will personally represent or fund legal representation for any Midland ISD students facing criminal charges after participating in last week’s U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) protest walkout.
Reynolds’ statement comes in response to a notice from the Midland ISD Police Department, made late January 30 on the Midland Crime Stoppers Facebook page, seeking information related to notes in school restrooms encouraging the student walkout, and asking members of the public to provide tips to law enforcement.
“If any kids from Midland ISD are charged with a crime because of the walkout, I will represent them on those criminal charges or pay for their representation,” Claire vowed.
Reynolds emphasized that youth civic engagement should be encouraged, not criminalized.
“Kids, I'm so damn proud of you for standing up for what you believe in. Don't ever let any adult tell you that your voice doesn't matter–or that you're wrong for caring about how our government treats human beings.”
As a licensed attorney and former ethics watchdog for the Texas State Bar, civil rights, constitutional protection, and accountability are central parts of Reynolds’ congressional campaign. She has repeatedly called for the abolishment of ICE due to widespread constitutional abuses perpetrated by the agency against U.S. citizens and residents, including against children.
